It's personal, emotional, and alarming. Cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters and one in three are estimated to get it in their lifetime. My brother, Mark has been traveling all over the state of Ohio making fellow firefighters aware of the high risks of cancer on the job and what they can do to prevent it - it's called Firefighters and Cancer. Mark leaves them with "12 steps to a safer (cancer safe) department".
He is also spearheading House Bill 292 which would allow cancer treatment coverage for professionals and volunteers if they've been on the job five years and develop cancer.
Each one of us has a family or friend who is a firefighter or knows of one, I encourage you to check out the 2015 Tour Calendar on the main page of sknluv.com and see if you can make it to one of his presentations.
