It takes a lot for some people to do something out of their comfort zone, for most men, it usually takes something tragic to make an impact. That was the case for me, it wasn’t until Mark was diagnosed with Melanoma that I then decided to get a skin exam and be more proactive skin exams. Mark started the training for Firefighters and Cancer early last year, and we urged firefighters to be proactive and get a skin exam. More than 300 firefighters took our advice and were given skin exams by Dr. Ravitskiy (shown above with Mark) at the Ohio Skin Cancer Institute here in Central Ohio; she told us that over 50% of the firefighters were asked to return for further skin biopsies. That being said, we have a lot of work to do to reach more firefighters and get the message out about cancer in the fire service. More importantly, we hope that you will take Mark’s diagnosis as fuel for you to be proactive and schedule a skin exam. I wish I could make it easier for you to make an appointment, but I don’t have an “easy” button for that, so I’m attaching a link to the American Academy of Dermatology. Simply enter your zip code and a list of dermatologists will be shown for your area.
